It involves applying insights from various fields of psychology, such as social psychology, general, differential, developmental, or slinical psychology, in such a way that they provide answers to questions arising in judicial and legal contexts. Examples of such questions include:

How does crime arise? What can be done to prevent the development of criminal behavior? What are effective measures for rehabilitating offenders and preventing recidivism?
Which psychological theories can be used to better understand judicial decision-making processes?
What are the consequences for victims of criminal behavior and how can so-called vulnerable witnesses (e.g., children or victims of a serious crime) be helped to give their testimony in court?
How can risks to a child’s well-being be identified, and what are appropriate measures to prevent them? How can parents involved in highly contentious divorce proceedings be helped to better serve the best interests of their children?
How can psychological expertise in court help to make more valid statements regarding the credibility of testimonies or the culpability of offenders?

Legal psychology deals with fundamental scientific questions, but at the same time is characterized by its strong application orientation and works closely with neighboring disciplines such as legal sciences and criminology, psychiatry, sociology, and (social) pedagogy.

Career fields in legal psychology

The demand for applied legal psychological knowledge is high. As court experts, legal psychologists prepare evaluations on various issues in family law, on the question of culpability and dangerousness prognosis for offenders, or on the credibility of witness statements. They also work in correctional facilities or forensic institutions (e.g., in diagnostics, assessment, and treatment regarding rehabilitation and resocialization) or in victim support organizations. In the field of police psychology, legal psychologists take on tasks in advising during hostage negotiations, operational planning, the supervision of police officers after difficult situations, as well as in training and staff selection/development for the police. Legal psychological topics can also be pursued as a scientist at universities or non-university research institutions.

What to expect in the degree program?

The master’s degree in legal psychology consists of various “basic” modules in the areas of statistical methods, diagnostics, clinical psychology across the lifespan, a freely selectable foundational specialization (general psychology, personality psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, or neurosciences), a non-psychological minor subject, an internship, and an applied specialization (clinical psychology, health psychology, applied social psychology, or applied cognitive psychology), as well as the modules in the legal psychology specialization.
The specialization provides knowledge of the theoretical and empirical foundations of the two major areas of forensic-psychological activity (criminal law and family law). These foundations are intended to encompass the current state of knowledge, including empirical validation, research methods for securing legal psychological knowledge, and the ethical and professional reflection of legal psychological activities. Based on this knowledge, concrete practical professional skills are taught in the concluding case seminar. These can consist of planning and preparing an expert evaluation on credibility, criminal prognosis, culpability, or family legal psychological issues, or in preparing a treatment plan or planning an evaluation within the framework of offender treatment. Depending on the specific research question, the projects carried out can be of a fundamental theoretical nature, or they can also include applied problems within the framework of field studies or collaborations with forensic institutions (forensic psychiatry; correctional facilities).
In addition, there is a “project work” in this area, which is divided into two parts (over two semesters). In the first part, current research questions in legal psychological research are developed, and open empirical questions are identified based on current literature. Based on this, a related research question, including study design and evaluation plan, is developed. In the second part, this research project is then carried out, evaluated, and summarized in a final report. Depending on the specific research question, the projects carried out can be of a fundamental theoretical nature, or they can also include applied problems within the framework of field studies or collaborations with forensic institutions (forensic psychiatry; correctional facilities). Examples of such projects include a validation study on feature-based content analysis within the framework of statement psychological evaluations or studies on making indirect measures of sexual interests more difficult to falsify. By applying current methods from social cognition to areas such as sexology, political psychology, or interpersonal relationships, we strive to advance current knowledge.

Current publications can be found on the respective pages of the team members.

The ABC of stereotypes – rethinking fundamental stereotype content dimensions

Sinister plots hatched in secret – conspiracy mentality as a generalized political attitude

Representations and lay explanations of history

Indirect measures of sexual interest and erotic cognition

Biased attention allocation to goal-relevant stimuli

Implicit social and romantic cognition

Self-control

Automatic categorization

Prejudices, stereotypes, and stigmas

Sexual orientation, atypical and paraphilic sexual interests

Sex offenders

Offender rehabilitation and risk factors for (sexual) delinquency

The department is responsible for teaching social and legal psychology in the B.Sc.
